Video sharing app ZEE5 is all set to venture into short video sharing app dubbed the Hypershots. The app is currently in the beta stage and is expected to be live by March-end. The Hypershots would compete with the likes of Byte Dance owned Tik Tok and Google’s short video app “Tangi,” Facebook’s Instagram, and YouTube. With this new app, ZEE5 aims to increase the user base and engagement.

Byte-dance owned Tik Tok has been quite popular in India and has been the go-to app for youth in India. The Chinese developed app has witnessed tremendous success in India, owing to wider internet penetration and cheaper data fares. Tik Tok is giving Facebook a run for the money. The Hypershots is a short video sharing platform and allows the celebrities, influencers, and others to create a short video spanning 1.5 minutes or 90 seconds. Initially, the Hypershots will feature ad-supported content and will be a subscription service in the long run.

Tarun Katial, the CEO of ZEE 5 entertainment, revealed the info at its second-anniversary celebrations held in Mumbai recently. He said that he wanted ZEE5 to be a one-stop destination for digital videos. The company has also earmarked Rs 100 crores capital expenditure to the platform. Out of which, 60% of the expenditure would be used to beef up the content. About 20% of the capital would be spent on the enhancement of technology, and the remaining 20% would be used for marketing and sales.

ZEE5 has its Plans Cut Out for a Successful Road Ahead

ZEE5 currently has more than 70 million MAUs and 100 million downloads on Google Play. As compared to other OTT platforms, ZEE5 has said 10X more originals as compared to other OTT platforms. The company now plans to launch 15-20 ad films a year and 80-100 originals this year. ZEE5 has also beefed up investments in tech by over 100 percent. The OTT platform is said to be dishing out personalised notifications to customers based on their preferences. ZEE5 is now available in 190 countries and operates in 1200 segments of users. Katial also said that ZEE5 is currently serving the content in 14 languages and would add more to the list in the coming days.
