TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) is bringing out a new simpler Mobile Number Portability (MNP) regime with effect from November 11. The new regime would speed up the process of Mobile Number portability from the current seven-day window. Users would now be able to port out their number within two days for the same circle. The cross-region porting for the same takes five days. On this behalf, TRAI has announced that users won’t be able to submit port out requests during the Switch-over period from November 4 to November 10.
Mobile Number Portability (MNP): Change Telecom Operator with the same mobile number
Mobile number portability (MNP) involves switching over to other network operators without changing the mobile number. Telecom operators are involved in aggressive competition these days for establishing their supremacy in the telecom space. Undoubtedly, it was Reliance Jio, which started the telecom war by the introduction of unlimited calling and free data benefits to the users. As such, leading telecom operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea (presently Vodafone Idea), and BSNL bore the brunt as many of their customers shifted from their networks to Reliance Jio.
Due to the aggressive competition among the telecom operators, the customers turn out to be the ultimate beneficiaries. Every now and then, one or the other telecom operator have been coming up with attractive offers to lure the customers to their platform. As such, customers are always on the look for the best options to migrate to the telecom operator that is offering value for money benefits. The Network coverage also seems to be another deciding criterion when it comes to switching between the networks. Under the current regime, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) involves the generation of port outnumber and submits the same to the chosen telecom operator. The port-out process takes a total of seven days for a successful migration. Keeping this in view, TRAI is bringing a new port-out regime to minimise the seven-day window to process requests.
Customers Cannot Submit Porting Requests During the Null Period
Due to the roll-out of the new port out regime, TRAI announced that customers would not be able to submit the number porting request between November 4 to November 10. The null period would run from 6 PM on November 4 to midnight on November 10. During this one week window, the telecom operators must close out all the previous, pending customer port out requests from November 4 to 10.
