OnePlus 7 Pro’s telephoto lens does not offer 3x Optical Zoom as promised

OnePlus 7 Pro has been declared as one of the fastest selling smartphones on Amazon India, ever since its launch a week ago. With more hands grabbing the device, it has also been highly criticised for its camera, which is said to receive an update soon in order to fix it. But now, the smartphone has reportedly met with yet another camera issue, which is the absence of 3x Optical Zoom that has been promised by the company while it was being marketed for a global launch.

According to the reports, the 3x telephoto lens that has been provided isn’t actually performing like it has been claimed. Instead, it is delivering somewhat closer to 2.2x while the rest 0.8x finish can be achieved by cropping with the help of SmartCapture cropping. Although this can be termed as a fruitful camera result for the camera lovers but for the professional photographers, the difference in the focal length of 78mm to 57mm makes a complete mess, since it is a major misleading number for the professionals.

One of the reports has been shared that featured two images click with 3x zoom mode and portrait mode with the telephoto lens, respectively. As a result, the picture clicked by the portrait mode shows a wider scene of view than the 3x zoom mode even both features the same telephoto lens and sensor. Noticeably, the pictures captured via portrait mode was produced at a higher 13MP resolution while the 3x zoom was captured using an 8MP sensor, which indicates that OnePlus camera is actually cropping down the picture in order to achieve 3x zoom result.

To recap, this is not the first time that the company has used a wrong marketing strategy. It has followed the same misleading portrayal during the promotion of the OnePlus 5, which was claimed to produce pictures with 2x optical zoom despite the actual result was a mere 1.6x optical zoom. The rest of the 0.4 zoom was achieved in the same way via SmartCapture that can be termed as an incorrect market speak.

OnePlus has shown completely neutral behaviour towards the statement and it did neither accepted nor denied it. However, it has responded to the statement saying, “The OnePlus 7 Pro has 3x zoom with no digital zoom or loss of detail. The telephoto camera serves two main purposes: 3x zoom and portrait mode photography. It will switch the field of view depending on the camera mode. With 3x zoom, the telephoto camera delivers the advertised lossless 8 megapixels images. Portrait mode utilizes all 13 megapixels from the sensor in the telephoto camera.”

It can be said that the difference would not really affect a vast number of users. But the fact mentioned about the 78mm focal length is something that will hit the mind of the photography enthusiast.
