MediaTek in an exclusive partnership with Reliance Industries would launch an ultra low priced 4G feature phone within a month. The report comes from Economic Times, wherein, TL LEE, the General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication revealed important details regarding the upcoming device. This comes on the back of falling demand for Reliance Retail 4G feature phone that was launched in July 2018. According to the market research firm, Counterpoint, Jio Phones share in the Indian feature phone market witnessed a sharp decline to 28% in the April-June Quarter 2019. This is a considerable decrease as compared to 47% year-on-year in 2018.
MediaTek was initially working with Reliance Retail for bringing affordable 4G VoLTE phone based on Android Go OS under LYF brand. However, they have now shifted their focus from smartphone to feature phone. The executive further clarified that many users are now looking to upgrade from feature phones to smartphones. Hence, it offers a wonderful opportunity to cash on the demand for both telcos and vendors.
The Taiwanese Chipset company has launched two G90 series chipsets with Helio G90 and G90T for the first time in India. Lee confirmed that Xiaomi would be the first vendor to launch a smartphone with these chipsets. Lee is optimistic and bullish on the Indian market and expects to do better than the earlier year. About 42% of the phones that are shipped this year bear MediaTek chipsets. He thus expects the company to fare well owing to the strong portfolio this year.
