Reliance Jio and Airtel are rolling out a new kind of technology called VoWiFi (Voice Over WiFi) wherein users can make voice calls using the Wi-Fi network. Even after rolling out VoLTE (Voice Over LTE), networks are in search of answering to the low voice quality that is arising due to poor network penetration in very dense areas of cities.
VoWiFi uses IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN to make Voice Over IP (VoIP) calls at any point in time when your smartphone connects to the WiFi network. Both Jio and Bharti Airtel rolled out the service in several cities in the country and offered technical support to a plethora of Android and iOS smartphone models.
What is VoWiFi Calling Technology?
VoWiFi calling that is rolled out by Reliance Jio and Airtel is similar to the VoLTE expect the thing that the VoWiFi calling uses WiFi instead of the 4G network to make calls. VoWiFi uses IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN which offers HD quality voice and video calls. Just like Skype, where we can make outgoing calls to a landline phone or a mobile phone using the data, WiFi calling uses the internet data to make calls.
How to Enable/Activate VoWiFi or WiFi Service on Your Smartphone?
- On Apple iPhones, you can easily activate WiFi calling in just 3 steps
- Go to Settings > Mobile Data > WiFi Calling
- On Samsung Android smartphones, simply open the dropdown menu and enable WiFi calling
- On other Android smartphones, go to Settings > SIM Cards & mobile networks > WiFi Calling
How to Make VoWiFi Calling and What are the Charges?
Once you enable the WiFi calling facility by following the above procedure, you are all set to make calls using your WiFi network. Both Jio and Airtel do not charge any extra amount for making WiFi calls. All you need is the active calling pack on your mobile number.
Can Jio and Airtel Users Make WiFi Calls Using Other Networks?
Remember that it is said officially Jio users can make WiFi calls on the Jio Fiber broadband network and Airtel users can make VoWiFi calls using the Airtel broadband network. However, there are reports from Airtel users that they are able to make WiFi calls using other broadband networks. It is not sure currently if this type of support will continue or not.
