Indian Telecom Industry is in a Phase of Consolidation

It appears that the telecom operators in India are in a phase of consolidation as evidenced by their discontinuation of various offers. Reliance Jio, the leading telecom operator in India has stopped offering unlimited voice calls to its prepaid subscribers. The Mukesh Ambani-led telco has introduced Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC) and started levying six paise per minute on voice calls made to other networks. The telco has also discontinued Rs 19 and Rs 52 sachet packs after the introduction of IUC Top-up vouchers. Additionally, Jio introduced All-in-One plans for both prepaid subscribers and Jio Phone users with IUC minutes. The plans are intended to help Jio customers making calls to other networks such as Airtel, Vodafone Idea and BSNL. Similarly, Bharti Airtel has also stopped offering data roll over feature to broadband users. On the other hand, BSNL is now offering a cashback of six paise cashback offer to its subscribers for making voice calls of more than five minutes. The cashback offer is applicable to BSNL wireline, BSNL Broadband and BSNL FTTH subscribers.
