Airtel is planning to take on Reliance Jio with a new range of streaming devices. The two streaming devices, which are called Xstream Smart Stick and Xstream Smart Box, are expected to launch soon in India. Last week, Reliance Jio during the RIL AGM 2019, announced a new set-top box that offers IPTV, virtual reality content, multi-user video conferencing, voice assistance, interactive gaming, home security, and smart home solutions in one package. To take on Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel seems to have already started its preparations to launch two devices targetted at different users.

Airtel TV App Renamed to Airtel Xstream:

Apart from launching Xstream Smart Stick and Xstream Smart Box, Airtel has also revamped its Airtel TV app and renamed it to Airtel Xstream. The app now comes with a new interface, default dark mode, and an option to connect to Xstream Smart Stick as well. The new version 1.18.2 is now available for download for beta testers in Google Play store. All these indicate that the launch of two devices is not too far.

Airtel Xstream Smart Stick comes with a model number HP2707 and looks like the Google Chromecast in terms of design. The device runs Android TV 8.0 OS and is equipped with HiSilicon Hi3798M V300 Quad-Core CPU. In terms of storage, the device comes with 8GB of onboard storage and 1GB RAM. The device is manufactured by Skyworth. The device comes with a Google Voice Assistant-enabled remote control as well.

According to Airtel Wynk, the Xstream Smart Stick needs to be connected to the HDMI port of the TV to stream videos. The website also states that the user needs to have an active Xstream premium subscription to watch the videos. Airtel offers a premium subscription to users who have an active postpaid, broadband, DTH plan or a prepaid connection having a recharge plan of Rs 199 or above.

Airtel is coming up with a new kind of set-top box to take on Reliance Jio’s set-top box. The Smart Box from Airtel runs Android TV 9.0 OS out of the box. The device is manufactured by Technicolor and is equipped with Broadcom BCM72604 B 1.8 GHz Dual-core processor. The device, bearing the model number, sports 8GB of internal storage and 2GB of RAM. The device supports DVB-S2 / IPTV / OTT features.

Airtel Xstream Smart Box is expected to come bundled with Airtel Fibernet subscription just like the Jio set-top box. As for the plans and subscription required to play the Smart Box, there is no official information available as of now. But Airtel Xstream app can be played on the device at no additional charge. As for the IPTV, Airtel could create a new plan for its broadband subscribers.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, during the earnings conference call with investors and media for the quarter ending in June 2019, first reported to the media that the company is planning to launch the Smart Box. He also stated that the device will offer full-fledged entertainment and deliver broadband service to users.

As for the pricing and availability of the Xstream Smart Stick and Smart Box, there is no official word from Airtel. We will update you with the price and launch details as and when we get to know them from Airtel.
