IN the year 1888 I first left home for the Far East, bound for Ningpo, in the Chekiang Province, Mid China, Where I was to take charge of a small hospital for Chinese women which had been started by Mrs Hoare. Mr Hoare, a son of the well-known Canon Hoare of Tunbridge Wells, was then Principal of Ningpo College, and afterwards Bishop of Hong kong.
